Chapter 14
All day Sunday at work felt lackluster, but he kept his attitude in
check and got through it. By evening Ryan was on the boulevard
eyeing the flow of traffic and pedestrians, unable to stand being
alone in his room. He stopped short as he spotted something.
A powerful high-riding pickup truck was waiting for the
signal to change. Ryan went cold. Behind the wheel was Sam
Lockwood. Ryan didn’t move, just watching it. As Sam rolled on
through the intersection, Ryan stood on the corner, and it
appeared as if Sam was looking for parking. Ryan kept his sights
on the truck as it rode farther up the street.
Sure enough, Sam parked and within a few moments he was
walking back to the main boulevard.
Ryan backed up and stood near the recessed entranceway of a
drugstore. As he held his breath in anticipation, Sam walked by,
never looking his way. Ryan kept watching as Sam entered a
club, walking right inside without a sideways glance.
All Ryan wanted to do was talk to him, to tell him he wanted
a little more than sex from him. Was that too much to ask? He
peered into the dim club interior. Loud techno music rattled his
eardrums even from outside. Since it was early there was no
cover charge, bouncer, or line to get in. Yeah he was underage,
but if he didn’t get served a drink, no harm, no foul. He had to
try.
As Ryan entered slowly, waiting for someone to shout at him
that he was too young, he could see club patrons greeting Sam,
as if everyone knew him. He watched Sam speaking to the
bartender, having to lean over the bar to be heard, then Sam sat
down on a barstool.
There were videos playing on a half dozen monitors; nearly
naked men dancing to the loud music. Ryan only glanced at them
quickly, not interested.
The bartender placed a pint of beer in front of Sam who
tossed cash on the bar, then picked up the glass and sipped it.
Ryan could see Sam nod as if he liked the choice of beer.
Sam and the bartender continued to talk. It was nearly empty
in the club since it was early. While Ryan crept closer, Sam
seemed to be occupied by a video until another man greeted him
who walked by. It was then Sam spotted Ryan.
At being seen, Ryan made a direct line towards him. “Hi,
Sam.”
“Hi, Ryan. You can’t be in here. It’s over twenty-one.”
“No one’s at the door checking ID.” Ryan sat on the barstool
beside Sam.
The bartender smiled wryly at him. “You want a soda?”
“Sure,” Ryan said, “ginger ale.”
Nodding, the man used the nozzle to fill a glass over ice. Sam
pushed the change from his beer over to pay for Ryan’s soda.
After he served Ryan, the bartender took care of the other men at
the bar.
Sam watched the video as Ryan kept his gaze on him. Since
Sam was ignoring him, Ryan said, “You left so quick after…”
“After?” Sam had the expression of someone who simply
didn’t give a shit.
“After…” Ryan tilted his head in the direction of the shop.
“Sex. After the sex.”
“Oh.” Sam stared back at the video.
Ryan peered
